Urania Basin
a DHAB: Deep Hypersaline Anoxic Basin

The woman who gave me this small sample, Cathy Offinger, passed it to me with a dramatic story of what it was like to be a woman on a ship that was partly in lock-down because they were responders to a call for help from a sinking fishing boat.  Ninety-three Egyptian refugees boarded R/V Atlantis.  The story, plus slide shows on “Dive and Discover”.

Lots of sulpher in the sediment and it made yellow, a color I hadn't seen from sediments before this.
