THE SOFT EARTH SPEAKS

The Soft Earth's History

In 1996, potter Joan Lederman was firing her kiln when Chris Griner brought a bucket of deep sea sediment from Research Vessel Oceanus.  Unaltered, It melted into ceramic glaze and for the next 23 years Joan glazed pots with sediments and rock powders -- with ceramic writing about their sources.  Explore the "About" section for highlights from those years and for Joan's resume.  Store includes ceramics, paintings, prints and silk scarves.

JOAN SPEAKS

OLD NEWS:
After 46 years having a series of fuel-burning kilns, I dismantled the last one and stopped making pots in 2016.

NEW NEWS:
I maintain my studio on Juniper Point in Woods Hole which is now part gallery, part invention space. Every day surprises me with conversations and outcomes I didn't plan; I process information and watch my worldview 'refresh'.  How do I use my voice and act as if I knew I had 48 more hours to breathe?

Activism reveals a recurring theme of how we learn independently within confines of current social orders.  Covid and remote work, Black Lives Matter, educational innovation and Diversity Equity Inclusion initiatives have grabbed my attention.  In the midst, as a way of practicing joy, I paint on canvas that I leave hanging outdoors to interact with weather.
