Earth -- a living system.
Working with clay, glaze and fire is a small-scale way I experience large-scale processes. Living landscapes emerge from the kiln.
Left : Evenly applied mud self-organized into these patterns when it was fired. Middle: the material revealed something about a landscape I couldn't have commanded the material to do. In this case, rock slurry from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge flowed during firing and illustrates the spreading action of that ridge. Right: Ocean sediment flowed into lavender glaze, foraminifera shells suspended in the mix, portray the whole cosmos, from down deep into vast space.
